S01 F07 Elisabeth Bik: The academic publishing system needs to change.
Shownotes
Dr Gisela Kopp and Dr David Labonte talk to Dr Elisabeth Bik, a microbiologist turned science integrity consultant. Dr Bik focuses on the identification of scientific misconduct and fraud in the academic publishing system. Her work has resulted in hundreds of retractions and corrections and has attracted considerable attention, positive from the largest part of the scientific community; less favourable by some of those affected by her reports. Besides Dr Bik’s motivation, they discuss the structural origins of and incentives for fraud, what individuals, institutions and publishers can and should do better or differently to avoid it, and its detrimental knock-on effects on the public confidence in science.
